FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Twins third baseman Brandon Waring smacked a Troy Patton fastball over the left-field fence with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Friday, salvaging a 2-2 tie against the Orioles at Hammond Stadium.

It was the second tie of the week for the Twins, following last Sunday's 1-1 game against Philadelphia.

Matt Guerrier struck out two batters in his first official inning of work this spring Friday, and Mile Pelfrey allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings. Brian Duensing helped Pelfrey escape a fourth-inning jam without allowing a run, but the left-hander gave up a solo home run to Orioles outfielder Henry Urrutia an inning later, breaking a 1-1 tie.

The Twins never threatened again against three Baltimore relievers. Twins closer Glen Perkins mowed down the three hitters he faced in the sixth inning, striking out two of them. Immediately after he left the game, the Twins announced that the Minnesota native had signed a four-year contract extension worth $22.2 million.
