Notes from camp: Worley shelled in second start of spring

Vance Worley’s promising first start of the spring didn’t carry over to his second.

Worley, battling for the fifth spot in the Twins rotation, gave up five runs on seven hits Friday and retired only four hitters in the Twins’ 6-5 victory over Pittsburgh. The ugly outing was in contrast to his spring debut Monday, when he pitched three scoreless innings against Baltimore, giving up only one hit.

“For the most part, I kept the ball on the ground, so I did what I could with that,” Worley said. “Today, the wind played a lot of factor on what my ball was doing — it seemed like the two-seamers were going the other way, back across the plate, and the cutters were sinking. So I tried to just battle through it.”

After the Pirates batted around in the first inning, the second didn’t go much better. Russell Martin doubled off the right-field wall, and Andrew McCutchen homered over it, chasing Worley.

“They blooped some balls, they had some choppers in the infield, but still. It’s early in spring training, but we want to see better than that,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He’s got to get the ball in better locations. But the velocity is pretty decent, he’s got a nice little breaking ball going down, and a better slot. So we’ll see how he goes from here.”

Not quite the same

Kevin Correia admitted he wasn’t fired up for his start in a Thursday morning B game at the Pirates minor league complex.

“Your adrenaline isn’t what it is in a big-league stadium during a big-league game. But you get used to it,” after pitching three scoreless innings. “I figure I could throw a little harder if I had more adrenaline right now, but I had good command.”

The Twins and Pirates ended up tying the B game 3-3. Eduardo Escobar homered and singled in four at-bats, while Byron Buxton went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Injury update

Aaron Hicks worked out at the Twins’ complex in Fort Myers and felt no recurrence of the minor elbow irritation that scratched him from Thursday’s lineup. He is scheduled to play against Toronto on Saturday.

Shortstop Pedro Florimon, currently doing hitting and fielding work on alternating days, will be ready to combine his workouts sometime next week, assistant General Manager Rob Antony said. Florimon, who had his appendix removed Feb. 17, could be back in the lineup shortly afterward.

Please welcome …

Twins righthander Kyle Gibson became a father Thursday after his wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to a baby girl, as yet unnamed, three days before a planned delivery. Gibson, who last pitched Monday, will return to camp sometime this weekend, the team said.

On deck

The Twins travel to Dunedin on Saturday for a rematch with the Blue Jays, who they beat 12-2 on Monday in Fort Myers. Phil Hughes will make his second start of the spring, albeit on only three days rest.
