Twins farm team quick-hits

FARM FEED

• The Twins made several minor league roster moves last week, the most notable being the promotion of righthanded reliever Michael Tonkin, who impressed Twins manager Ron Gardenhire during his time in major league camp this spring, to Class AAA Rochester. Tonkin, a 30th-round pick five years ago, earned seven saves and posted a 2.22 ERA as the closer at Class AA New Britain. Most impressive: Tonkin, a 6-7 righthander with a live fastball, struck out 30 batters in 24⅓ innings, and walked only eight while giving up no home runs.

• Righthander D.J. Baxendale, the Twins’ 10th-round pick last summer, was promoted to New Britain’s starting rotation after giving up only 34 hits in 57⅓ innings at Fort Myers, but his first start for the Rock Cats was a rough one. Baxendale went 4⅔ innings and gave up eight runs, or one fewer than in his nine starts combined at Class A.

• With Chris Herrmann now with the Twins, catchers were shuffled below; Kyle Knudson went from Fort Myers to New Britain, and Dan Rohlfing moved up to Rochester, where he homered and scored four runs in his first two games.
