La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Twins spring training: Weather is wrecking the practice schedule

Posted by: La Velle E. Neal III Updated: February 14, 2013 - 8:42 AM

It rained pretty good overnight, leaving the fields at the Lee County Sports Complex rather soggy. So the Twins have altered their workout schedule.

Pitchers will throw in the batting cages by the minor league fields. Catchers will work on blocking balls in the dirt. The position players who are here can hit in cages next to the main field and, eventually, the minor league fields.

There is more rain in the forecast. Heavy rain, actually. Within the next hour or so, actually.

So the Twins had to adjust. It happens.

Position players were in the cages during the 7 o'clock hour. Hitting coach Tom Brunansky was working with Jamey Carroll and a few other hitters. Tony Oliva arrived today, and was working with Darin Mastroianni.

About a dozen position players have appeared in camp already, mostly the younguns. The veterans show up closer to reporting day. Justin Morneau told me during TwinsFest that he was going to work out in Arizona right up to Friday's reporting day.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said yesterday that he wasn't surprised so many position players have reported early.

``I expect it, that's normal,'' he said. ``Guys are anxious. Once you get through TwinsFest and caravan and everything guys are pretty pumped up about getting down here and getting going. I expect that. There are a few guys that don't come right away, whether its visa problems or what you are going to miss a few like that but the reporting date isn't until Friday. This is a good turnout. Most of the guy are here. It's fun to see.''

The visa problem Gardy referred to probably was directed at third baseman Deibinson Romero, who is not expected to report to camp in time from the Dominican Republic. Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said there is some sort of snafu with some files down there that will force Romero to be late. He's had no visa problems in the past - only now when he's due to take part in his first-ever major league spring training camp. What timing.

Will check back later with updates.
