A fellow club member (John) and I got out at about 8:30 this past Saturday morning on the Mississippi River - Pool 2. Again I launched from the Lions Levee launch, this time instead of looking for water towards the north, we headed south. We poked around the mouths of backwaters and in the backwaters themselves for bass. Main channel water temps were around 54 degrees and we found water in the afternoon touch 58 degrees in some far back areas of the backwaters.
A few of the mouths gave up smallmouth bass on 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten jigs tipped with plastic chunks. Further back in the backwater areas we found plenty of cooperative largemouth bass and some good size fish. Almost all of our fish were 15" or larger and I had one over 19", which is pictured. The largemouth were a split between Jigs, dark colored tubes and craws fished on texas rigs. We fished until about 2pm; in total we landed about 4 smallies and 13 largemouth bass, it was a great day on the water!
I think the huge turn around in my success came more from location then what the fish were or I were doing the weekend before. Fishing is much like real estate, location, location, location!!!
