Continued: Anderson: Part lodge, part museum in Manitoba

  • Article by: DENNIS ANDERSON , Star Tribune
  • Last update: October 20, 2013 - 12:12 AM

One guy on site this week was from Montana, a couple were from Illinois, and more from Minnesota.

And just as Jimmy did, Rick and David employ members of the Lavallee and Ducharme families, among other locals, to guide, cook and clean — duties they perform with pride and dedication.

Noting the camp’s pristine condition, I said to Max and Cole, “This is as much a museum as it is a hunting club.”

So it is. And in good hands, too.

For which Jimmy, I’m sure, is grateful — eternally.

  • David Reese of River Falls, Wis., is manager of the famed Sports Afield Duck Club on Delta Marsh, Manitoba. Founded by the late Jimmy Robinson, the camp was visited over the years by some of the biggest names in entertainment, business and politics, including such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway, Clark Gable, Babe Ruth and Barron Hilton.

  • Built in 1958, the current lodge of the Sports Afield Duck Club remains largely unchanged. Founder Jimmy Robinson of the Twin Cities was a trap and skeet writer for Sports Afield magazine.

  • Cleaning ducks at the Sports Afield Duck Club can be an all-afternoon affair for as many as five people. In some families living in or near St. Ambroise, Manitoba, multiple generations have worked at the club.

  • Jimmy Robinson founded his first duck club on Delta Marsh in 1935, later opening a club at its present location in St. Ambroise, Manitoba, in 1958.
