Lynx open training camp with a number of new faces

The Lynx opened training camp with most of their veterans not present.

Lindsay Whalen, Janel McCarville, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson, still playing or having just finished playing overseas, won’t join the team until next week. That left Maya Moore, veteran free agent signee Tan White, second-year guard Lindsey Moore and a bunch of new faces at practice.

Here are some newsy nuggets from today:

--Top backup guard Monica Wright had arthroscopic surgery on her left knee Friday and will be sidelined for a few weeks. There is a chance she will not be ready by opening day, which makes the signing of White suddenly a pretty big deal. Coach Cheryl Reeve said Wright was experiencing some pain and swelling in the knee while working out last week. An MRI was done on the knee and she had the surgery, which went well.

--Former WNBA and international star Janeth Arcain, a native of Brazil, is in town for the first part of camp to help Damiris Dantas. Dantas, the Brazilian drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft by the Lynx, is in camp this spring competing for a backup post position. Because Dantas speaks very little English, Arcain – a part of the Houston Comets dynasty in the early years of the WNBA – is here to help the transition.

--Former Gophers women’s coach Pam Borton attended the practice.

--Reeve said most of the regulars would not play in the team’s preseason game against the Australian national team May 5. They will get a few practices in, then play for the Lynx in the WNBA preseason tournament starting May 9.

That’s about it for now. Have a good night.
