Fourth-ranked Michigan routed the Gophers 9-1 in six innings on Sunday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium to win two of three games in their Big Ten series.

Megan Betsa threw a three-hitter for the Wolverines (33-6, 7-2 Big Ten) while Sierra Lawrence had three RBI, two on a single in the second that gave Michigan a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines pulled away with six runs in the sixth, all with two outs.

The No. 12 Gophers (30-7, 6-3) got their only run in the fourth on Danielle Parlich's double.

U loses to Rutgers in baseball

After trailing 5-3 through five innings, Rutgers rallied to edge the visiting Gophers 6-5 in Big Ten baseball. Second baseman Connor Schaefbauer had a double, triple and two RBI for Minnesota (10-17, 2-7 Big Ten). Relievers Max Herrmann and Jon Young combined for four scoreless innings for the Scarlet Knights (10-19, 5-4).

Two from U make national swim teams

Two Gophers, Kierra Smith and Jakub Maly, earned spots on different national teams Saturday at the Canadian swimming trials in Toronto.

Smith, the NCAA champion in the 200-yard breaststroke, was disqualified in that event but placed second in the 100 breaststroke. The junior was named to Canada national women's team for the world championships in Kazan, Russia from July 24-Aug. 9 and the Pan American Games July 10-26 in Toronto.

Maly qualified to swim the 400 individual medley for his native Austria in the world championships and in the World University Games July 3-14 in Gwangju, South Korea. The sophomore did so with a time of 4:20.18 in the 400 IM preliminaries.

• The Gophers men's tennis team beat host Penn State 4-0. Felix Corwin of Minnesota (15-6, 6-1) beat Tomas Hanzlik 7-5, 6-0 for the clinching fourth point.

• Tereza Brichacova beat Maggy Lehmicke of Nebraska, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 1 singles to lead the Gophers women's tennis team (15-6, 5-2) to a 5-2 victory at the Baseline Tennis Center.
