– The nation’s best power play was clicking again on Saturday as the Gophers women’s hockey team defeated North Dakota 3-1 to sweep their WCHA series at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Dani Cameranesi scored two power-play goals, at 17:41 of the first period, and at 12:51 of the second, to lead No. 1-ranked Minnesota (26-1-1, 20-1-1 WCHA).

The Gophers remain unbeaten (13-0-1) in 14 games since their 3-2 loss to UND on Nov. 17 at Ridder Arena. That loss came on a Saturday after an easy 6-1 victory in the first game of the series.

This weekend the Gophers won 5-1 Friday and made sure their would be no letdown in the second game this time.

Rachel Ramsey and Hannah Brandt set up Cameranesi for her first goal — with 10 seconds left on Layla Marvin’s high-sticking penalty.

Cameranesi’s second goal, the 14th of the season for the 5-5 former Blake star, came only 13 seconds after UND’s Johanna Fallman went into the box for holding. It made the Gophers’ power play 5-for-5 in the series — and briefly 30 percent for the season (33 of 110) — before the home team finally killed a slashing penalty two minutes later.

Meghan Lorence gave the Gophers a 3-0 lead in the fifth minute of the third period.

Shelby Amsley-Benzie kept No. 3/4 UND (16-7-3, 13-6-2-2) close by stopping 39 shots; sophomore Amanda Leveille had 17 saves for the Gophers. She had a shutout until Gracen Hirschy scored for UND with 3:33 left to play.

The victory was the Gophers’ 42nd in a row on the road, including 15 this season.
