Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune was named Minnesota sportswriter of the year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Scoggins is a columnist and features writer who spent the final four months of 2013 as the Vikings beat writer.

Minnesota’s sportscaster of the year is Mike Grimm, the University of Minnesota sports play-by-play announcer on the Gophers Sports Network/Learfield.

The national sportswriter of the year is Sport Illustrated’s Peter King, and the broadcaster of the year is NBC hockey play-by-play man Mike Emrick.

Sportscaster Marv Albert and sportswriter Rick Reilly will be inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame during the awards weekend June 7-9 in Salisbury, N.C.

Former Lynx center Taj McWilliams-Franklin, who retired from the WNBA after the 2012 season, is playing basketball again. She and her daughter, Schera Sampson, recently joined Clube Amigos do Basquete Madeira in Portugal. McWilliams-Franklin, now 43, had 15 points and five rebounds in her first game, and her daughter had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

“You do this because you love it,” McWilliams-Franklin wrote on Facebook.
