St. Thomas rolls into final in baseball regional

Top-seeded St. Thomas rolled into the NCAA Division III Mid West Regional baseball championship round Friday with a 22-2 victory over St. Scholastica in Whitewater, Wis.

The Tommies broke the game open with an 11-run fourth. J.D. Dorgan drove in five runs.

Third-year coach Chris Olean won his 100th game (100-35) for the Tommies (37-8), who will play at 3 p.m. Saturday. St. Scholastica (34-10) will play Wisconsin-Whitewater at 10 a.m., with the winner taking on St. Thomas.

U golfer moves up

Gophers junior Erik Van Rooyen shot even-par 71 in the second round of the NCAA men's golf regional in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Van Rooyen will head into Saturday's final round in a tie for 30th place with a 36-hole total of 3-over 145.

Jose Hernandez's RBI single in the ninth gave the Saints a 3-2 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Midway Stadium.
