This is Amelia Rayno's third season on the Gophers men's basketball beat. She learned college basketball in North Carolina (Go Tar Heels!), where fanhood is not an option. In 2010, she joined the Star Tribune after graduating from Boston's Emerson College, which sadly had no exciting D-I college hoops to latch onto. Amelia has also worked on the sports desk at the Boston Globe and interned at the Detroit News.

UPDATE: Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg agrees to contract extension

One day after Shaka Smart rumors died abruptly, another candidate surfaced.

Multiple outlets reporting that Minnesota reached out to Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg, 40, including the Ames Tribune’s Travis Hines.

Would Hoiberg actually go to the Gophers, away from Ames, his hometown, and a place that calls him “The Mayor?” That’s a different story.

Those close to Hoiberg say it’s unlikely considering he and his family’s ties.

A call by the Star Tribune to Hoiberg’s cell phone went unanswered.

UPDATE: Iowa State's AD just tweeted that Hoiberg agreed to a 10-year, $20 million extension. So cross another coach off the list.
