Setting the scene

Temperatures again were in the mid-80s for Monday's second day of camp, but a midafternoon string of clouds kept practice from getting too steamy. Players again were in shells. They will be in pads for the first time Tuesday, and coach Mike Zimmer is excited about that.

Teddy picks it up

Second-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was a little rusty on the first day of camp. He fared better Monday, spreading the ball around to wide receivers Charles Johnson, Mike Wallace and Jarius Wright. One of the day's biggest plays came when Bridgewater threw a perfect deep ball up the numbers to Johnson, who split cornerback Terence Newman and safety Harrison Smith to come down with a long reception.

Patterson flashed

Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson still is with the second-stringers, but he is putting himself in position to make big plays. Early in practice, he fended off cornerback Marcus Sherels to make a leaping grab of a deep ball from backup Shaun Hill. Late in the afternoon, Patterson broke free again and made a nice adjustment along the sideline, but the ball went through his hands and clanked off his shoulder pads.

Brouhaha brewing?

For the second consecutive day, tensions rose between left tackle Matt Kalil and defensive end Everson Griffen. On this day, Griffen put rookie right tackle T.J. Clemmings on his butt with a bull rush. Kalil then came out of nowhere to shove Griffen hard in the facemask. The two didn't take it any further, but there is plenty of camp remaining.

Finding his niche

Jerick McKinnon has looked natural running routes in third-down situations and is elusive in the open field, but the second-year running back will have to impress in pass protection to secure a regular role. The coaches will have a close eye on him Tuesday when the pads come on.

Camp Chatter

"When he comes out and I watch him, he's way ahead of everybody else."

— Offensive coordinator Norv Turner on running back Adrian Peterson.
