Legacy Christian Academy sophomore Josh Peterson enjoyed a solid week from the plate and the mound, leading the Lions to a pair of victories.

Peterson, a shortstop, fueled an offensive onslaught against Bethany Academy, going 3-for-3 with two walks and scoring five runs. Legacy Christian, located in Andover, won 17-4 in five innings.

For the week, Peterson went 5-for-9 with three walks for a .667 on-base percentage. Two of his five hits were doubles. He stole three bases and scored six runs.

Taking the mound against Heritage Christian, Peterson went the distance in a 1-0 victory. He scattered nine hits, allowed one walk and struck out six batters. Lions coach TJ Oakes, a former Gophers' pitcher, said Peterson threw 70 percent of his pitches for strikes. Peterson also scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning.

Gerads enjoys record meet

Champlin Park sophomore Allison Gerads won three events at the Robbinsdale Armstrong Invitational on April 17, each one good for a meet record.

Her long jump of 18 feet, 9 inches, measured 7 inches farther than the 18-2 mark she recorded as the Class 2A state meet runner-up last June.

She ran a leg of two relays. The 4x100-meter team clocked a time of 49.28 seconds, tying a school record. The 4x200 relay finished in a time of 1:46.16.

Gerads wasn't the only athlete who enjoyed a breakout meet.

Armstrong junior Evan McClellon blazed to the fastest reported times in the 100 (11.01) and 200 (22.09) this spring.

Centennial track and field teams have big meets

Centennial senior Erica Oawster set a school record with a discus throw mark of 140 feet, 9 inches — second best in the state this season — April 14 at Champlin Park.

Two days later, the Cougars' boys and girls' teams went on to victories at the Heart of the Lakes Invitational hosted by Annandale High School.

Oawster won the discus throw, one of five Cougars girls to take first place.

Other champs were sophomore Andrea Gessner (100), freshman Emily Mulberry (400), senior Jessica Boespflug (800) and junior Lydia DeBuhr (pole vault).

On the boys' side, the Cougars' winners were sophomore Riley Trettel (100), junior Daniel Anderson (200), sophomore Jacob Namyst (400), sophomore Dylan Johnson (800), senior Steven Thomson (discus throw) and senior Jonas Greib (high jump).
