Sophomore Sara Groenewegen pitched her second career no-hitter as the Gophers softball team defeated visiting Northwestern 11-0 in five innings on Sunday.

Groenewegen struck out 12 in her 21st victory of the season. The Gophers (33-7, 9-3 Big Ten) swept Northwestern (20-13, 8-3) in a three-game series for the first time since 1991.

Groenewegen's no-hitter was the 22nd in program history. She also no-hit Penn State as a freshman.

The Gophers made it a blowout by scoring nine runs in the third inning. Paige Palkovich hit a grand slam in the inning and had nine RBI over the weekend. Groenewegen struck out 27 in 12 innings during the series.

Gophers add lineman

Sean Foster, a consensus four-star offensive tackle from Illinois, committed to the Gophers on Sunday, passing up offers from Nebraska, Virginia Tech and Kentucky, among others. The 6-8, 285-pound Foster, from Mundelein (Ill.) Carmel Catholic, is ranked as the No. 15 offensive tackle in the Class of 2016 by Rivals.com.

His commitment came one day after the Gophers landed Mayer Lutheran offensive tackle Sam Schlueter, who chose Minnesota over Wisconsin and Michigan State. The Gophers now have six players committed for the Class of 2016.

Huskers beat U in baseball

No. 23 Nebraska had seven extra-base hits in a 16-hit attack in a 12-3 baseball victory over the Gophers in the teams' series finale in Lincoln, Neb.

Christian Cox hit a pair of two-run homers for the Cornhuskers (26-11, 5-4 Big Ten).

Toby Hanson, Tony Skjefte and Jordan Smith drove in runs for the Gophers (12-19, 3-9), all in the fourth inning.

Winona State softball coach reaches milestone

Winona State's Greg Jones became the 50th coach in Division II softball history to reach 600 career wins in the Warriors' 8-0 victory over the University of Mary on Saturday at Alumni Field.

Jones is in his 15th season as a head coach, all at Winona State. He has led the Warriors to at least 30 victories in every season.

Only two other active head coaches have more victories in the same number of seasons as Jones, whose .735 career winning percentage ranks eighth among active coaches and 13th all-time in Division II.

MSU Mankato piles up more runs in DH sweep

A day after putting up 51 runs in a baseball doubleheader sweep, seventh-ranked Minnesota State Mankato scored 37 more Sunday in another sweep of Bemidji State in Bemidji.

The Maverickswon 14-4 and 23-1. They totaled 39 hits, including 10 home runs. They scored 14 runs on 13 hits in the sixth inning of the second game.

Max Waletich went 4-for-6 with three homers and five RBI in Game 2.

• Leandro Toledo and Felix Corwin won in both singles and doubles for the Gophers men's tennis team (17-6, 8-1 Big Ten), which shut out Michigan State 7-0 in East Lansing, Mich.

• Paula Rincon Otero won tiebreakers over Jade Hilton in the final two sets to claim the lone singles point for the Gophers women's tennis team in a 5-2 home loss to Illinois.
