West metro riders wonder why no Twins Express for Tuesday's All-Star Game

Metro Transit has ramped up both train and bus service to get fans to and from Tuesday's All-Star Game at Target Field by adding extra service on the Northstar Commuter line and increasing the frequency of Green Line and Blue Line trains.

But curiously the agency is not operating its popular Twins Express Route 679 from the County Road 73 Park and Ride in Minnetonka.

Conversely SouthWest Transit is offering bus service for both Monday's Home Run Derby and the All Star Game on Tuesday. Service will be offered from the East Creek Station in Chaska, SouthWest Village in Chanhassen and SouthWest Station in Eden Prairie.

Metro Transit runs the Route 679 bus for all 81 Twins home games. With what might be biggest game in the stadium's short history on Tuesday night, Dan Polglaze of Plymouth is puzzled and frustrated as to why the 679 is not running, leaving west metro fans on their own to find their way home.

"They run the Twins Express for every Twins game, even the ones where about 5,000 people show up for the game," he said in an email to the Drive. "With Season ticket holders having snapped up on the order of 60 percent of the tickets, they are not running the 679 bus. In fact they are not running any public transportation options that will get me from the game anywhere west. They have the route, the ticket booth, everything but no bus service for the All Star Game. This seems like one colossal screw up."

Metro Transit said it carefully considered the costs and benefits on how and where to deploy extra service for Tuesday's game.

"While we appreciate that some west metro residents would like to take an express bus to the All-Star Game, Metro Transit felt there would not be strong enough demand to justify the expense of additional express bus service from the County Road 73 Park & Ride," said spokesman Drew Kerr.

Metro Transit said regular route service can be used to access All-Star events. But a quick check of the Metro Transit website showed that the last 675 express bus to Ridgedale Shopping Center, not far from the County Road 73 Park & Ride, departs 11th Street and Harmon Place at 9:17 p.m., or what likely will be around the 5th inning.
