Lynx stress defense in Wednesday's practice

With a rare stretch of three off days between home games, the Lynx had the opportunity focus on the details.

“That tough stretch where we didn’t get much practice time when we were kind of away from here and not in our routine, it just felt like we were just getting through things,” coach Cheryl Reeve said at Wednesday's practice. “We weren’t really good at things.”

But the Lynx have been taking the time to improve the biggest hole in their game – defense. Because anything lacking in that area is not exactly something they’d want to expose to the Stars in Thursday’s game at Target Center, as San Antonio leads the league with a .385 three-pointer percentage.

Reeve said her team is well aware of what the Stars will bring, though, especially as their affinity for field goals is similar to Sunday’s opponent, Seattle.

“Our defense, we know, is very challenged,” she said. “It’s one of our weaknesses right now that we’ve really locked in on, defending the three-point line. We’re very mindful of it.”

The Lynx have a good feel for how San Antonio operates and vice versa, so Reeve said Thursday’s match will just come down to who executes better.

  • Reeve gave an update on forward Rebekkah Brunson, who is still out after surgery to repair a right knee tendon, saying Brunson is mostly working on low-impact exercises in practice. “Where she’s at is definitely a part of the mapped out plan from a timing perspective, and we’re still looking at post-All-Star break for her. When exactly, we don’t know.”
  • Guard Seimone Augustus said she has mostly been watching practice other the past few days but has joined in some warm-ups just to see how her left knee bursitis feels. She called the injury frustrating, as one day she will feel ready to play, and her knee will swell up the next. “At this point, it feels great. It’s just a matter of what the trainers and coaches feel is best.”
