GAME RECAP
Impact player
Tim Howard, United States
If it was his final World Cup appearance — at age 35, he has not yet said what his intentions are — what a way to go out. Howard singlehandedly kept his team in the game with 16 saves, a record at the World Cup since the statistic was first kept in 1966.
WHAT IT MEANS
The United States did no better in Brazil than it did in South Africa in 2010, losing 2-1 in overtime in the round of 16. But Jurgen Klinsmann is signed as coach through 2018, and he appears committed to moving soccer forward in this country.
UP NEXT
The national team will defend its CONCACAF Gold Cup title next year, and in 2016 it will begin qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
