Preview: Newly minted North American Soccer League spring season champion Minnesota takes on defending Major League Soccer champion Sporting Kansas City in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

United FC at a glance: Minnesota, using several reserves, defeated Des Moines won 1-0 and avoided another upset loss in the third-round on May 28. United will field a healthier roster against Kansas City. Forward Christian Ramirez was named the NASL Player of the Month for the combined months of May and June.

Kansas City at a glance: Two Sporting Kansas City standouts, defender Matt Besler and midfielder Graham Zusi, are among 10 players from MLS on the U.S. World Cup team. Zusi’s corner kick led to the game-winning goal against Ghana on Monday. A familiar face to many Minnesota players, Djorn Buchholz, will be cheering against his old pals. Buchholz, former CEO of the Minnesota Stars, is director of fan experience for Kansas City.

Upcoming international soccer: After the fall season opener at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on July 12, United will play Swansea City, an English Premier League club, on July 19 at the National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine. Two weeks later it will face Ottawa in an NASL match at TCF Bank Stadium, following a locally televised match between Manchester City of the English league and Olympiacos from Superleague Greece.
