Elk River basketball coach Caouette recovering after heart scare

Elk River girls’ basketball coach Reed Caouette got a health scare last week that forced him to miss two games.

Caouette, 38, endured a bout with pericarditis, or inflammation of the lining around the heart. Caouette, who has dealt with the condition since he was 16, said he experienced “more intense chest pains than ever before” Jan. 10. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and remained there for two additional days.

Doctors recommended Caouette get a week’s worth of rest to aid his heart. While he missed the Elks’ loss to Osseo on Jan. 14 and the Jan. 17 victory against Coon Rapids, Caouette couldn’t entirely stay away.

He visited players after practice twice last week, providing information on his situation and offering them encouragement. Caouette planned to be back on the sidelines this week.

Caouette said contracting a virus triggers the pericarditis. His latest episode was his fourth in about the past two decades. Doctors have cleared him to resume coaching. He is in his eighth season with the Elks.

“My heart itself is healthy, and I plan to go about my business as normal,” Caouette said.
