New Prague’s volleyball program has been average in the past decade, hovering around the .500 mark. But there hasn’t been anything average about the play of senior setter Emma Hughes.

Hughes recently broke the school record for career assists in a 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 nonconference victory over Mayer Lutheran. The previous mark of 1,351 was set by Megan Erickson Giesen in 1999.

“What I most enjoy about coaching Emma is her hard-working attitude, communication efforts and her honesty,” New Prague coach Angie Andersen said. “She is someone that both coaches and players can easily communicate with and count on.”

Hughes set the school marks for assists in a match and season in 2012. She had 54 set assists against both Chaska and Northfield last season. She finished the year with 791 assists.

“She is charismatic, leads by example and is a player who consistently asks her hitters what she can do to make her setting better,” Andersen said. “She does a great job of keeping everyone on the same page.”

Headed to Marquette

Rosemount senior guard Hannah Grim has verbally committed to Marquette’s women’s basketball team.

Grim becomes the second Irish player to join the Division I basketball ranks. The only previous Irish player to go Division I was Christine Kennedy in 1991. Kennedy also went to Marquette.

“Hannah is a high-energy player,” said Chris Harder, former Irish girls’ basketball coach and current cross-country coach. Harder also lauded her ability to “get to the rim.”

Grim averaged 18.7 points per game as a junior. She has scored more than 1,000 career points.

Grim is also a four-time state cross-country individual qualifier.

Top performances

• Junior wide receiver Joseph Eckhoff had quite a season opener for Northfield’s football team. He caught six passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns in a wild 49-35 nonconference loss to Irondale. He caught scoring strikes of 11, 23, 31 and 64 yards.

• Shakopee freshman Tess Misgen won the Bauman/Rovn Invitational girls’ cross-country meet at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. She covered the four-kilometer course in 15 minutes, .7 seconds. Misgen opened the season with a third-place finish in the St. Olaf Showcase.
