Quick Q&A: Laura Sonday, South St. Paul tennis

  • Updated: September 7, 2013 - 5:33 PM

When it comes to free time, Sonday doesn’t get much while attending the Classic Suburban Conference school. The Packers’ three-sport athlete is also a part of the a cappella varsity singing group, varsity show choir and on the student council. Here is a closer look at South St. Paul’s No. 1 girls’ tennis singles player, who also plays basketball in the winter and runs track in the spring.

The best movie I’ve seen in the last year? “Gatsby.”

Three words my friends or teammates might use to describe me: Outgoing; humorous; focused.

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are … “Disturbia” by Rihanna; “It’s Gonna Be Me” by N’Sync; “Beautiful Soul” by Jesse McCartney.

At my first varsity practice, I felt … intimidated! We had some great talent on our team, and I was not sure how to handle it as a seventh-grader who knew almost no one.

What did you work on most in the offseason? Everything. Strengths, weaknesses and mental game in all of the sports. I think it’s important to be active in the offseason to improve and set good examples for the rest of the team.

What is your goal in girls’ tennis? My goal this year is to possibly make it to state for tennis. I am not sure if this dream will be accomplished at this time, but I will not stop working toward it for the next two years.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete so far? As a sophomore, I was given the honor of being named conference MVP in the Classic Suburban for tennis. I didn’t lose any conference matches in 2012.
