Prince, Wade expected to be Team USA picks Tayshaun Prince earned a spot on the USA Basketball team for the Beijing Games, a person in the NBA told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Also expected to be chosen are Dwyane Wade, Michael Redd, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity; the official roster will be announced Monday in Chicago.

Meanwhile, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told the Arizona Republic that Suns forward Amare Stoudemire has declined a chance to be on the squad.

• National gymnastics champion David Sender of Stanford withdrew from Thursday night's competition at the Olympic trials in Philadelphia after spraining his ankle in a fluke training accident. Thom Glielmi, Sender's coach, said the gymnast is still hoping to compete in Saturday's finals.

Sasha Artemev and Jonathan Horton finished 1-2 Thursday in the first of two competitions at the trials. Horton is in first place when scores -- including those from last month's national championships -- are weighted and combined.

Christina Loukas increased her commanding lead in the 3-meter springboard semifinals at the U.S. Olympic diving trials in Indianapolis. Loukas led by nearly 30 points after the morning preliminaries. She totaled 729.85 points, well ahead of second-place Nancilea Foster (681.40) Ariel Rittenhouse, second after prelims, slipped to third with 650.30 after botching her second dive.... In the men's 10-meter platform, David Boudia and Thomas Finchum each recorded four perfect 10s on a dive and ranked 1-2, respectively after the semifinals.

HORSE RACING

Trainers say Big Brown will race in Haskell Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown will race Aug 3 in the Haskell Invitational at New Jersey's Monmouth Park.

"The race fits his style," co-owner Paul Pompa Jr. said. "We were disappointed after the Belmont, and we needed to regroup."

Pompa said the choice of the 1 1/8-mile Haskell over the 1¼-mile Travers Stakes on Aug. 23 at Saratoga was made based on the track and weather.

TENNIS

Top seeds Ferrer and Dementieva reach semis Top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer advanced to the Ordina Open semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Mario Ancic 6-4, 7-6 in Den Bosch, Netherlands. Ancic won the tournament in 2005 and 2006, but missed last year because of illness. Ferrer will face unseeded Argentine teenager Juan Martin Del Porto in the semifinals.

Among the women, top-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia beat 18-year-old Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-4.

Eighth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine posted her third career victory over a top-10 player when she upset No. 2 seed Anna Chakvetadze, the defending champion, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

AROUND THE HORN

College World Series: The game between North Carolina and LSU was suspended because of rain, with North Carolina up 2-0 in the first inning. It will be resumed tonight.

Soccer: Germany advanced to the semifinals of the European Championship for the first time since 1996, getting goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack in a 3-2 victory over Portugal in Basel, Switzerland.

Football: NBC renewed its television contract with Notre Dame through the 2015 season. Last year, the Irish drew their lowest ratings since the network began broadcasting their games in 1991.
