Eastview turns tables on rival Kennedy

The Lightning broke the game open in the second half and convincingly avenged its only loss.

A 20-point blowout Friday night helped cover up Eastview girls' basketball's lone blemish on an otherwise flawless season.

The host Lightning spurned Class 4A's No. 1, Bloomington Kennedy, 66-46 in Apple Valley.

More than a month had passed since Kennedy (21-3) handed Eastview (23-1) its only loss of the season, 57-49 early in South Suburban Conference play, but it still weighed on the No. 3 Lightning.

"It was still in the back of everyone's head," Eastview sophomore guard Madison Guebert said after scoring a game-high 24 points. "We've really wanted to get that back. It's a really good feeling to get this one."

Eastview sophomore Hana Metoxen had eight points, five rebounds and four assists, but her defense against Kennedy standout Jade Martin was her biggest contribution.

Martin struggled for position under the basket as the two challenged one another aggressively. Metoxen couldn't forget the way Martin controlled Kennedy's offensive flow in the previous meeting and focused on limiting touches.

Martin's nine points, only two in the second half, meant good things for Eastview. The Eagles' forward also spent the last five minutes on the bench after frustration appeared to overwhelm her. Following Martin's final miss of the night, she fell to the floor and brought Eastview's Mikaela Wilson with. Though she said it wasn't intentional, the officials thought otherwise and issued a flagrant foul on Martin.

"Me and Jade had some battles. She seemed like she was a little frustrated," Metoxen said. "She wasn't making as many shots."

Kennedy briefly took the lead following the half, 25-23, before Eastview's Tyra Johnson (17 points) and Guebert combined for 16 points during a 23-9 run that built a 12-point lead.

Kennedy hadn't lost since the first week of the season. The Eagles were on a 20-game winning streak and maintained Class 4A's No. 1 ranking since Jan. 9.

"We didn't make any adjustments and no one could score," Martin said. "It was an off night."

Kennedy's Kenisha Bell played for the first time since injuring her hand midway through the season and scored nine points.

No one in the Eagles' lineup scored in double figures.
