Saturday's prep roundup: Grand Rapids hoops edges Forest Lake

  • Updated: February 3, 2013 - 12:35 AM

BOYS' BASKETBALL

• GRAND RAPIDS 74, FOREST LAKE 73: Forest Lake came seconds away from upsetting Class 3A, No. 6 Grand Rapids in front of a loud home crowd Saturday, but 6-foot-9 sophomore Alex Illikainen's 31 points proved too much for the Rangers to overcome. The Thunderhawks, who have appeared in the past two Class 3A boys' basketball tournaments, improved to 13-3. Forest Lake was led by Noah Davis, who scored 24 points.

MARSHALL 68, BLAKE 58: Class 3A, No. 7 Marshall upset Class 3A, No. 3 Blake on the road, notching the Tigers' 17th victory of the season. Senior guard Austin Saugstad scored a season-high 26 points. Blaine Crawford scored 23 for the Bears (12-5).

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

HILL-MURRAY 71, CRETIN-DERHAM HALL 62: Sophomore Olivia Graskewicz hit a school-record seven three-pointers on her way to scoring 23 points, helping the Pioneers defeat the Raiders.

BOYS' HOCKEY

• EAGAN 5, PRIOR LAKE 4: Class 2A, No. 12 Prior Lake gave the home crowd an impressive try, but even a late comeback attempt wasn't enough to knock the Class 2A, No. 7 Eagan from their perch at the top of the South Suburban conference. Jesse Gabrielle scored twice for Eagan in the third period to offset the Lakers' last-ditch effort, and Andrew Lindgren stopped 29 shots for the victory.

• HERMANTOWN 4, TOTINO-GRACE 0: A busy second period and a stout defense are to credit for Class 1A, No. 5 Hermantown's upset win at Class 1A, No. 3 Totino-Grace. Chris Benson scored twice for the Hawks, which allowed just 20 shots during the game in order to improve to 16-4-1 overall. It's just the fourth loss of the year for the Eagles.

BURNSVILLE 4, APPLE VALLEY 2: A late-game power-play goal cut Burnsville's lead to one, but Apple Valley wasn't able to upset its host Saturday. The Blaze had 38 shots on goal, and Eagles goalie Mac Wartick stopped 34 of them. Christian Smith scored both of Apple Valley's goals, and four different players scored for Burnsville.

GIRLS' HOCKEY

• LAKEVILLE SOUTH 4, LAKEVILLE NORTH 3: The Cougars were significantly outshot at Hasse Arena, but two early goals provided the winning difference over Class 2A, No. 8 Lakeville North. Keeper Chloe Crosby stopped 24 of 27 shots for Class 2A, No. 14 Lakeville South. Haley Ravndalen and Morgan Morse both scored twice for the Cougars. The two Lakeville squads now stand tied atop the South Suburban conference.

HILL-MURRAY 1, EDINA 1 (OT): Two of the state's top teams met in Edina, but neither could walk away with a victory. Class 2A, No. 5 Edina scored first, with Nicole Rash finding the net in the first period, but Class 2A, No. 6 Hill-Murray followed suit with a Kate Smith power-play goal a few minutes later. The shots kept coming after that second goal, but the scoring stopped. Alexys Woodward had 25 saves for the Pioneers, and Boomer Sonnek stopped 30 shots for the Hornets.

• ANDOVER 4, ELK RIVER/ZIMMERMAN 2: Class 2A, No. 10 Andover maintained its strong grasp of the Northwest Suburban Conference with a win over the visiting Elks. Sidney Portner scored twice for the Huskies, and Maddie Rooney made 21 saves.
