Wadena native Johanna Olson, a top runner, dies at 33

  • Updated: January 5, 2013 - 10:03 AM

Johanna Olson, a Wadena native who won an NCAA Division III cross country title and twice competed in the Olympic marathon trials, died Thursday in Bend, Ore., after a long battle with cancer. Olson, 33, was hospitalized last month when a recurring brain tumor continued to grow.

A graduate of Luther College, Olson won the Division III cross country championship in 2000, three years after her initial brain surgery. The seven-time all-America ran the Olympic marathon trials in 2004, finishing 45th, and in 2008, finishing 46th.
