Edina's Day 1 lead provided no comfort for boys' golf coach Phil Finanger. He knew well that the team in the rear-view mirror, Wayzata, had plenty under the hood.

To Finanger's delight, his players carried the same urgency.

"Guys would get a bogey, then come back a few holes later and get a birdie," Finanger said. "They all knew every stroke counted and they didn't stop playing."

Good thing. Edina edged the Trojans by one stroke (590-591) and won its first state title on the links since 1987.

Sam Foust, the team's No. 1 player all season, led the way with a 145 to tie for second place. Kobi Boe and Bobby Terwilliger each carded 149 and tied for ninth. Ben Olson finished one stroke behind to complete the top four scores that counted toward the total.

"We all knew it was going to be close no matter how well we played," Foust said.

Captain

The turning point came on the 16th hole. Foust birdied and Wayzata got a bogey, giving Edina what Finanger called "the cushion that mattered."

"Six strokes was nothing to us coming into Day 2," Finanger said. "Wayzata is a great team and we knew what we were facing."

Captain waits, wins

Patience helped boys' champion Chris Captain on and off the course.

Captain, a senior from Rochester Century, took a 142 into the clubhouse, then waited more than an hour for the leaders to finish.

He took his clubs to the car. He ate a snack. Then he did math in his head and watched as final scores were posted.

"I never felt 100 percent comfortable," Captain said.

On Wednesday, Captain carded a birdie and eight pars. The back nine included a birdie, seven pars and a round-ending bogey. He won by three strokes.

"I tried to stay consistent, be patient and give myself chances for birdies," Captain said.
