A Duluth college student who survived bitterly cold temperatures overnight last month had parts of her feet amputated on Monday.

Alyssa Jo Lommel was found on a porch outside her neighbor's house near the University of Minnesota Duluth campus after spending the night outside in temperatures that dipped to minus 17.

In a CaringBridge post, Lommel's mother, Teri, said the amputations were performed on Monday. "She ended up basically only losing the tips of her toes on one foot, so she has little nubs yet, which will help greatly for balance and walking," her mother wrote. But on the other foot, surgeons had to amputate "just below the ball of her foot," Teri Lommel said.
