Bruce McLeod, commissioner of the WCHA for the past 20 years, announced his retirement following this season.
McLeod has been affilated with the league since he was a freshman forward on the 1965-66 Minnesota Duluth hockey team. He remained at UMD after graduation in athletic administration, and was athletic director there when he succeeded Otto Breitenbach as WCHA commissioner in 1994.
WCHA men’s teams won eight national championships during his tenure as commissioner, and a women’s WCHA was also formed during that time. The women’s WCHA has produced all 14 NCAA champions.
With the advent of the Big Ten men’s hockey conference, however, the western Division I college hockey teams split before this season into the Big Ten, WCHA and Northern Collegiate Hockey Conference. The 10-team WCHA includes only four of last season’s 12 teams.
The lowdown on McLeod's career is on the WCHA website.
