Hotels splurge on holiday lighting to brighten guests' visits

Hotels around the world are getting into the festive spirit of the season by paying extra attention to their Christmas trees.

Claridge’s in London has chosen designers Dolce & Gabbana to create one inspired by their Italian roots, which has handcrafted Sicilian puppets, hand-painted Italian glass baubles and multicolored lights.

The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Arizona will have a four-story, musically animated tree with 65,000 LED lights that twinkle and dance to 10 popular holiday songs, and the Liberty Hotel in Boston has six upside-down 9-foot-tall trees suspended from a 90-foot rotunda, which are adorned with 720 tiny cluster-glass ornaments.

At the Greenbrier in West Virginia, 50 Christmas trees between 6 and 15 feet tall throughout the resort are decorated with lights, French ribbon and hundreds of ornaments, and the InterContinental Paris-Le Grand has teamed with the French baker Ladure for a tree covered in gold macarons.

The Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C., has 18 holiday-theme trees and vignettes decorated by the local design community, and the tree at the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai in Thailand will be set amid the hotel’s rice paddy and made by the on-site gardeners from 15,000 homegrown mondo plants.

Distinctive trees are a way to grab the attention of hotel guests and bring in a local crowd, said Adam Weissenberg, head of travel, hospitality and leisure at Deloitte & Touche.

“I think that Christmas trees are viewed as part of the holiday spirit more than religiously, and nice ones create buzz and add to a good mood,” he said. “In some cases, they also entice travelers to come to the property again the following year.”
