MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin officials say they don't anticipate President Barack Obama's announcement that insurance companies can renew canceled health care coverage will have much effect here.

Obama's health care reforms require all insurance policies that go into effect on Jan. 1 to offer an array of benefits mandated under the reforms. That means as of Jan. 1 they can't sell plans that fall short of those benefits, leading insurers to cancel those policies.

That has led to pressure on Obama, who said people could keep their plans if they liked them. On Thursday the president said insurers can continue offering the old policies for a year.

Wisconsin insurance officials have been allowing consumers to renew plans that expire on Jan. 1 early, allowing the policies to roll through that date unaffected.
