Superintendent Valeria Silva had a busy first day of school in the St. Paul school district - a fact readily apparent from her day of tweeting.

She has quite a crowd of Twitter followers, too.

Last month, Silva and Minneapolis schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson annnounced a contest to see who could gain the most followers between Aug. 1 and Labor Day.

At the time, Silva felt compelled to note that while Johnson held an edge heading into the contest, it didn't matter, because the match-up would be over a single month, and they were starting from scratch.

But the contest ended up being no contest at all.

Silva blew past Johnson by such a wide margin that as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, she now had 3,776 followers, compared with 1,227 for Johnson.

Silva was aided, apparently, by word of the contest circulating in her native Chile.

Johnson now must treat Silva to dinner at a St. Paul restaurant.

As for the first day of school, Silva made her way from Frogtown to the East Side, and was joined by state Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius at the new Parkway Montessori and Community Middle School, according to one of the superintendent's many tweets.

At day's end, she summed up the first day as "long, rewarding, enriching."
