Freshman running back Berkley Edwards will miss Thursday's season opener against UNLV with a sprained ankle but could be ready to return for next week's game at New Mexico State, Gophers coach Jerry Kill said Tuesday.

During the Big Ten teleconference, Kill said cornerback Derrick Wells (bruised shoulder/tight hamstring) remains questionable for Thursday. Wide receiver Derrick Engel has returned to full speed, however, after being limited for part of preseason camp with a groin injury.

Kill said he wasn't ready to announce who will handle the team's punting, kickoff and field goal kicking duties.

Later, on his weekly radio show on 100.3 FM, Kill indicated Donovahn Jones and Drew Wolitarsky are two freshmen who are likely to play at wide receiver Thursday.
