Minnesota UNITED FC GAMEDAY
What: 3 p.m. Sunday at Edmonton. Live broadcast available online at MNUnitedFC.com.
Preview: Minnesota (4-4-2), tied for fourth in the North American Soccer League standings, finds its spring season title hopes plausible. League-leading Carolina earned a draw against Atlanta on Saturday and San Antonio won. That means a Minnesota victory Sunday and any one of those four teams could claim the title on the July 4 regular-season finale, earning a spot in November's Soccer Bowl.
United FC at a glance: Set pieces and late goals — Minnesota’s undoing this season — led to a bitter loss last week at Carolina. An early 2-0 lead disappeared late in a 3-2 defeat. Coach Manny Lagos noted his team’s early energy and effort but lamented that players did not maintain that intensity throughout the game. Allowing three goals moved Minnesota to tops among NASL teams for most goals allowed (17).
Edmonton at a glance: The “Eddies” (2-4-5) play an effective style to mask their lack of firepower. Edmonton ranks sixth in the seven-team NASL with 10 goals scored but leads the league in fewest goals allowed (11). A last-minute goal by San Antonio doomed Edmonton’s to a 2-1 loss last week. It marked the first two-goal game by an opponent since Minnesota’s 2-0 victory on April 20.
