Buffalo Wild Wings has taken a minority stake in a Los Angeles-based pizza chain, launching a strategy of investing in restaurant concepts unrelated to chicken wings.

Golden Valley-based Wild Wings said in a federal securities filing Tuesday it has invested an undisclosed amount in PizzaRev, a "fast-casual" pizza concept with three locations in the Los Angeles area. PizzaRev "empowers you to craft your own artisan pizza," according to its website.

Fast-growing Buffalo Wild Wings is the nation's largest chain of restaurants specializing in chicken wings. In 2012, its executives announced the company would seek investments in new restaurant concepts, and PizzaRev marks the first venture of that type.

"Over the past year, Buffalo Wild Wings has been investigating emerging restaurant concepts with high growth potential as we continue to build our dynamic company," said Kathy Benning, executive vice president for marketing.
