Letter of the Day (March 18): Girls' sports, male coaches
- March 17, 2013 - 9:30 PM
I enjoyed myself at the state high school girls’ basketball tournament this evening. The quality of girls’ play has expanded by leaps and bounds since I was in high school (a few — but not too many — years after Title IX was passed).
I was a bit surprised to see that all of the head coaches and eight of nine referees were male at the three games I watched. I looked through the program and discovered that only three of the 36 teams in the girls’ state tournament have female head coaches.
Call me a dinosaur, but I would think that after 40 years, women would trickle up into head coaching positions. It has happened in the NCAA.
