Bye-bye 'Baby': PSY's 'Gangnam' No. 1 video
- November 25, 2012 - 5:11 PM
South Korean rapper PSY's "Gangnam Style" has become YouTube's most viewed video of all time. YouTube says in a posting on its Trends blog that "Gangnam Style" had been viewed 805 million times as of Saturday afternoon, surpassing Justin Bieber's "Baby," which has had 803 million views.
The blog says the "velocity of popularity for PSY's outlandish video is unprecedented."
PSY's video featuring his horse-riding dance was posted on YouTube in July, while "Baby" was uploaded in February 2010. It's become a global sensation, with many people around the world mimicking his "Gangnam Style" dance. In their October meeting, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a South Korean, joked that he had to relinquish his title as "the most famous Korean," and tried a few of PSY's dance moves. After Hagman's death, what would J.R. do?
The death of Larry Hagman has no doubt left the powers-that-be at TNT reeling, along with fans of the rebooted classic night-time soap opera. The new version, which focuses mostly on a younger generation of Ewings but also made good use of such series veterans as Hagman and Linda Gray, was a huge hit last summer on the basic-cable network and ranked as the No.1 new adult cable drama.
Hagman's iconic portrayal of J.R., with his wicked sense of humor -- and capacity for vengeance when someone crossed him -- was a major part of the show's popularity. The cast has been filming in Dallas since September, and the second season premieres Jan. 28. Hagman's death raises serious questions for the third -- and beyond. The producers knew Hagman had been ill, so it's possible they've already dealt with his character's demise. Only two things seem certain: The show will give J.R. the send-off he deserves -- there'll be weeping and wailing, oceans of flowers and seething talk of revenge.
