Class 2A girls soccer: White Bear wins in OT

Madison Scheer was reluctant to discuss the play that clinched the most important victory in White Bear Lake girls' soccer history.

"I'm not sure I can give you our secret weapon," Scheer said.

The Bears upset No. 1-ranked Lakeville North 1-0 in overtime Tuesday at the Metrodome to advance to the Class 2A state championship game for the first time.

Scheer, who scored in the 85th minute, eventually opened up about the play.

Anna Morrison lined up to take the corner kick, the Bears' first of the overtime. Instead of booming a shot toward the Panthers' goal, she passed to decoy Taylor Johnson, who let the ball go through her legs to a waiting Scheer.

Scheer watched the goalkeeper move toward Johnson.

"I knew I had to kick it as hard as I could, on the floor, far post," she said.

Said Scheer of the set piece: "It had yet to work this year. It had been so close, but this is where we needed it to count."

White Bear Lake goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs made a big first-half save, diving to deny Lakeville North forward and future Gophers teammate Simone Kolander.

"Tara is our rock," Scheer said. "She keeps us alive."
