Savage sports dome up and ready to go
- October 27, 2012 - 10:18 PM
A controversial air-inflated sports dome in Savage is getting its finishing touches and will see its first action on Thursday, city officials said.
The city is calling it the Sports Center, and it's inviting everyone to an open house to see it from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.
The $5 million facility, built with city financing, is located within Community Park, 13500 Dakota Av.
It's an air-inflated structure with three fields, three batting cages and a golf cage, providing training space during the chilly months for youth athletic groups and the wider community. Soccer and lacrosse teams will be the biggest users.
Groups will rent fields for blocks of time, with fees paying back the costs of building and operations.
Visitors are welcome from 7 to 9 a.m. weekdays to walk or jog, free of charge.
The center will operate through April. The dome will then come down for storage off site, but the turf can still be used.
