The 2012 state tournament could well go down in state history as a coming-out party for New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva's Carlie Wagner.
The sophomore guard scored a state-tournament record 48 points in the Panthers' 73-59 victory over Pequot Lakes in the Class 2A third-place game. Wagner's outing boosted her three-game total to 112 points, also a tournament record.
She also scored 43 points in an opening-round victory over Braham and 21 in a loss to Sauk Centre.
The previous single-game record of 47 points was shared by Tayler Hill of Minneapolis South and Brittany Chambers of Jordan. Hill also had the old three-game record of 106 points.
"It's a great feeling to get the record, but I would have traded it to get a 'W,' " said Wagner, referring to the Panthers' semifinal loss to Sauk Centre. "But I'm taking a real positive outlook on this tournament. We came down here and played great basketball and took third place. It was a very cool experience."Peschel to be seen again
Sauk Centre senior Kali Peschel finished her career with a Class 2A championship game loss at Target Center. But this likely isn't the last you'll hear of Peschel in Minneapolis.
She signed with Iowa this winter, and said the Hawkeyes never wavered despite Peschel tearing her ACL last June.
"My first call when it happened was to Iowa; my first call when I was cleared to play again was to Iowa, and they were very supportive through the whole process," she said.History lesson
Former MSHSL associate director Dorothy McIntyre joined Vicki Davis for a ceremonial tip-off before the Class 1A championship. McIntyre was instrumental in bringing equality to girls' varsity athletics in Minnesota. Davis is a former girls' basketball official. The history of state basketball tournaments has been celebrated all weekend.Etc.
Total attendance for the state tournaments was 35,192. Saturday's attendance at Target Center was 7,548.
