In response to a Feb. 25 letter, counts of people bicycling and walking indicate that, on an average day, 2,835 bicyclists and 92 pedestrians use the Martin Olav Sabo Bridge.

On an annual basis, this works out to about a million bicycle and pedestrian trips across the bridge.

More than 1,000 bicyclists and 253 pedestrians daily still choose to cross at 28th Street. Combined, the total number of bicycles and pedestrians crossing Hiawatha Avenue at this location has increased 240 percent since before the completion of the Sabo Bridge in 2007.

As these increases suggest, targeting infrastructure investments to safe and convenient facilities such as the Sabo Bridge or the many new bike routes in the Twin Cities gives more people the option to bicycle or walk instead of driving.

Overall, Bike Walk Twin Cities data indicates that bicycling has increased more than 50 percent since 2007 and walking by 18 percent in the Twin Cities.

Surveys of these cyclists and pedestrians indicate that many would otherwise be traveling by car.
