Rahr, Annie Laurie Malarkey 84, died on December 8th, 2014, after a brief illness. She was at home in Long Lake, Minnesota surrounded by her children. Laurie was born in Butte Montana on December 13, 1929. Her parents were Thomas Burgess and Susan Tucker Malarkey, and she was the second of four children. Laurie was raised in Portland, Oregon, where she attended the Catlin School and then graduated from Reed College. While enrolled at University of Washington to pursue a doctorate in Russian literature, she met Guido Reinhardt Rahr Jr., from Manitowoc Wisconsin. They married and settled in Portland. Five children followed soon after, and in 1971 the Rahr family moved to Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Laurie was known as an intellectual, with a deep knowledge of literature, music, theatre and art. She was a lifelong painter, and supported and served on the boards of The Children's Theatre Company and The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library. Passionate about the environment and liberal issues, Laurie was above all a devoted wife and mother to her husband, children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed. Laurie was preceded in death by her husband in 2005. She is survived by her children Guido Reinhardt Rahr III of Portland, Oregon, Sarah Rahr Fortna of London, England, Margaret Rahr Pauly of Longmont, Colorado, Christina Rahr Lane of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and William Tucker Rahr of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and eleven grandchildren. Please send remembrances to the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, The Jungle Theatre, and The Wild Salmon Center. Memorial service date, time and location to be announced soon.
