Heaney, Joseph Aloysious, II MD Born January 16, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph and Elizabeth (Curran) Heaney . He embodied the qualities of his Irish ancestors including great wit and fighting spirit. He played football, rowed, and was a lifeguard. Joseph and his beloved wife of 53 years (Mary Brust) raised and provided for 6 children (all grown).While living in Philadelphia, he graduated from West Catholic High School in 1947, and obtained a BS degree from St Joseph's College in 1951. In 1955, he graduated with an MD degree from Jefferson Medical College and married. He completed internship at Misercordia Hosp., Philadelphia in 1956. He served in the USAF (1956-58), as a Captain and flight surgeon, stationed in Germany during the Cold War. He practiced psychiatry for over 40 years and witnessed numerous changes in the field (starting with psychoanalysis, then Cognitive Behavior Therapy and the "psycho-pharmacologic revolution" which lead to the deinstitutionalization of state hospitals). He practiced in a variety of settings including Public and Community Psychiatry, Private Practice, and numerous locum tenens assignments in multiple states and facilities. He spent most of his career working with the severely mentally ill who are often forgotten and without voice. And was a gifted clinician in the pharm-acologic management of serious and persistent mental illness. He is survived by 6 children: Joseph (Verna) Heaney, III of Cincinnati OH, Dr. Kathleen Heaney MD of Mpls MN, Stephen Heaney MD (Natalie) of Milwaukee WI, Clare (Andy) Thompson, of Brainerd MN, Michael Heaney MD (LaRae) of Maple Grove MN, Patrick Heaney Esq. (fiancée Karen Nague) of Cumberland WI, 12 grandchildren, one sister (Bunny Backe of Gulph Mills (PA) and 8 nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all the excellent care-givers at St. Therese Oxbow Lake and Dr Scott Fairbairn. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Doctors without Borders or Stephen Ministry, St. Joseph the Worker. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 11 AM at St. Therese Chapel, 5200 Oak Grove Parkway, Brooklyn Park, MN. Visitation will be Friday, October 17 from 6-9 PM, at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 7300 42nd Ave. N., New Hope, MN, and for a half hour prior to service at the chapel beginning at 10:30 AM.
