Mercado, Mary P. (nee Salas) Age 96, long time resident of St. Paul, died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on December 14, 2017. Born on September 11, 1921. Preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, J. John Mercado; parents Juan and Ricarda Salas; siblings, Lucy Salas, Louise Rodriguez, Anita Wilwert Joseph and Peter Salas. Mary held various jobs throughout her life beginning at a young age, but the most memorable was working for Goodman Jewelers in downtown St. Paul. However, when her first grandchild, Michelle, was born, Mary retired to provide day care for her. Mary was a devoted and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She always put the needs of her family before her own. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her son and his girlfriend, Dale J. Mercado and Irene Diaz; daughter Rosemary and husband, Guy Peterson; granddaughter, Michelle Peterson; grandsons John Mercado and fiancee Becky Kienitz and Matthew Mercado; and four great grandchildren, Cameron, Adriane, Brooke and Teagan. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister, Carmen Davis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Bob and Joyce Mercado, Jack and Irene Stackpole, Alice Oneal, Danny Rivera, Howard Strabala and Beverly Truskolaski; many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces; and many friends. Since February of 2017, Mary was living at the Bentson Family Assisted Living Residence at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul. There she received extra care and attention from the Sholom staff, especially Keneitha, Marque and Nora. Much appreciation is also given to Mary's private companions, Christina Dawit, Elsa Habte and Ivy Marie, who were at mom's side day and night since May. She called them her angels and near the end of her life while they cared for her, she told them regularly "God Bless You." Mary's family would also like to acknowledge Dr. Kathleen M. Macken and Dr. Himanshu S. Sharma from United Family Medicine along with Dr. Domingo G. Perez from Minnesota Oncology for their excellent care in helping Mary live a long and beautiful life in which she remained mostly healthy and independent.
