Cafarelli, Nicholas John III age 74 of Minneapolis, passed away on November 8, 2017, following a five year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas & Eleanor, and mother-in-law Gladys S. Kisner. Survived by wife, Lesley; children, Micòl Alexandra Cafarelli (Sharman Potechin) and Ariel Sarah Cafarelli (Avigdor Edminster); siblings, David (Bonnie), Joan, Robert (Jill), Michael (Maria Gladys) and Margaret (Ron) Gletherow; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Nick was a man of deep faith, Catholic with a Jewish soul; great intellect, with a remarkable aptitude for languages; and robust humor ranging from esoteric trivia to silly movies. Papa Nick was warm, kind, and quick to make friends, adored by children, and interested in the lives of people from all backgrounds. A devotee of Dorothy Day, he was committed to social justice and a conscientious objector. Nick had attended seminary (Seton Hall and St. John's, Boston); had degrees in classics, English, and ancient Near Eastern studies; taught at Al-Hikma University in Baghdad, Iraq; worked at the Brandeis University and Boston Public Libraries; and served as senior editor at Catholic Digest magazine. He read voraciously, including Proust and Dante many times in English and the original French and Italian, and loved music including gospel, middle eastern, and classical. He was devoted to his family and with his wife created a Jewish home. Catholic Mass 11 a.m. Monday, November 13, at HOLY ROSARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2424 18TH Ave. So., Minneapolis.
