Winkels, Joan E. Age 84, formerly of Edina, passed away Aug. 9, 2017. Joan was born Sept. 15, 1932 to Silverius (Hannigan) and Jay Harriman in Mankato, MN. At an early age, her family moved to Star Lake in Dent, MN. She graduated from Perham High School. Married Thomas A. Winkels and lived in the Diamond Lake Area of South Minneapolis, where they raised three daughters. While the girls were young, Joan volunteered at their school and was a Girl Scout leader. She then worked at Norwest Bank for 20 years. Through the years the family spent many summers at Star Lake, where she enjoyed bird watching and gardening. Joan courageously battled Parkinson's disease for 30+ years. Survived by children, Susan (Pat) Devane; Anne Marie (Mark) Monte and Sherri (Eugene) Simon; grandchildren, Michael (Caryn), Brian (Brittaney), Tim (Cassie), Christopher, Caitie, Peter, Mary and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Harrison, Oliver and Theodore. Joan was preceded in death by Thomas and their infant son, Jeffrey. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Benedictine Health Care Center for their loving compassionate care of Joan, along with Dr. Steven Stein and Allina Hospice. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial Monday, (Aug. 21) at 11 AM at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, 835 2nd Ave NW in New Brighton, with visitation one hour prior to Mass at church.
