May, Walter H., Jr. age 80, of Hopkins, MN. Wally passed away peacefully on Feb. 16 after a courageous battle with MDS. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Catherine Pewters May and his two daughters, Margaret May Meahl (Gregory) of Hamilton, MA and Catherine May Durno (Craig) of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; his three brothers: Peter H. May, Richard E. May, and Thomas C. May; and his loving grandchildren: Leslie, Ben, and Eliza Meahl and Sam and Harry Durno. Wally was born on December 12, 1936 to Walter and Margaret May of Edina, MN. As a young man Wally spent summers at Camp Warren and many years skiing locally and out West. Wally graduated from Edina High School in 1955 and went on to Dartmouth College where he graduated with honors in 1959. In addition, he was class president of the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth and earned his MBA in 1960. Early on Wally worked in advertising at Campbell Mithun and then transitioned to a 25+ year career at Piper Jaffray, from which he retired in 1995. He proudly served on the boards of the youth group BEEF as well as ING Funds. Wally was a consummate Renaissance man who made the most of every day. He enjoyed carpentry work and could make or fix just about anything. A life-long piano player he could play everything from old standards to Brubeck and Rachmaninoff. Wally played golf for 60+ years at his beloved Minikahda Club and on fun golf trips out West with his wonderful golf buddies. Wally loved the May family cabin in northern Minnesota where he spent hours fishing, completing chores, hiking, and swimming with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed being there with his brothers to open and close the cabin each year. Wally had a terrific sense of humor and was a loving husband, father and friend; he will be sorely missed. The May family sends a heartfelt thanks to the caring nurses at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Infusion Center. A memorial gathering for Wally is planned for Sunday, May 7th at the Minikahda Club. Memorial gifts in Wally's name can be made to the MDS Foundation, 4573 South Broad Street, Suite 150, Yardville, NJ 08620 (mds-foundation.com) or to Animal Humane Society, 845 Meadow Lane N, Golden Valley, MN 55422 animalhumanesociety.org
