Hughes, Charles E. Our dear, sweet Charlie died at home in hospice care, January 26, 2017, age 86. He was an extraordinary man; a gifted artist who loved lettering, art, sculpture, classical music and opera. He grew up in Chicago and Milwaukee, beginning a life-long career as a commercial lettering artist while in his teens. He was a champion gymnast in his 20's, achieving Wisconsin AAU All Around 1st Place in 1957, among other awards. Starting in the mid 1970's he and two of his sons restored a historic 1886 three flat in Old Town Chicago. Charlie's fonts (Century Nova and Indy) logo designs and lettering work are seen every day - Minute Maid, Sara Lee, DiGiorno Pizza, Marlboro, Masterlock, Newport Music Festival, Yamaha instruments, Aleve, etc. etc. Later in life he moved to Edina, Minnesota, doing more letter design, carving and sculpting in stone, some of which is seen in churches and cathedrals. He taught at many calligraphy conferences and elsewhere. For more, google his name. Charlie is preceded in death by son Larry. Survived by wife & artist soulmate Janey Westin; children by previous marriage, Alison Shelor, Chuck (Jane), Dan (Chris), and Jennifer Gordon (Rick); and grandchildren.
