Engwall, Richard L., MD "Dick" Age 85, of Hopkins, passed away peacefully on Feb 5. Preceded in death by parents Pastor Lambert and Elizabeth and sister Betty Francis. Dick's compassion for people was displayed in his love of family and friends and in his professional career from small town doctor in Ivanhoe and Tyler to president of the MN Society of Anesthesiologists. He graduated from Winthrop HS and obtained degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College and the Univ of MN Medical School. He was a proud Swede who couldn't pass up a lutefisk dinner. He was a man of diverse interests and hobbies. In 1949, he won the State Fair grand championship with his Guernsey cow, Annie. He trained dogs at Armstrong Ranch, Anoka, was a field trial judge and an avid gardener, carver, hunter, cook and mentor. You'd be hard pressed to find a more positive person who valiantly fought myriad illnesses with strength and grace. His legacy was one of loving and caring for and about people. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Vianne, son Garth (Holly), daughter Meredith Walsh (Patrick), son Craig, grandchildren Nick, Cassie (Justin), Mari (Joseph) and Mia, great-grandsons Alakai and Thaddeus; brother Clarence (Marilyn) and cousins. Memorial service Wed, Feb 22, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 715 Mtka Mills Rd, Hopkins. Visitation at 10 am, memorial service at 11 am, with lunch following. Memorials to Gethsemane Lutheran Church or Gustavus Adolphus College in lieu of flowers. Private interment at a later date.
