Martinka, Sr. Agnes, SLW age 89, of Edina, passed away on January 7, 2017. Born May 13, 1927 in Lucan, MN and raised in New Ulm. She entered religious life in 1946 and made her final profession August 20, 1954 as a Sister of Christian Charity. Sr. Agnes was a founding member of the Sisters of the Living Word in 1975. She served as a school principal for 40 years including as principal of John Ireland School from 1991-98. She celebrated her 70th anniversary as a religious in June 2016. She was preceded in death by parents, Herbert and Agnes (Steffl) Martinka and step-mother, Agnes (Kernan) Martinka. She is survived by brothers, Robert (Diane) Martinka and Jerome (Phyllis) Martinka, many nieces and nephews and the Sisters of the Living Word Community. A special thanks to SLW, relatives, friends, Minnesota Oncology and Allina Home Hospice who assisted in her care. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, (Jan. 12), at 11:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Campus of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 6 Interlachen Rd., Hopkins. Visitation is Thursday from 9:00 11:00 AM at the Church.. Interment at Guardian Angels Cemetery, Chaska, MN. Memorials to Sisters of the Living Word.
